The Darlow Report
By Andrew Darlow
What's this, you might ask? The Darlow
Report? Think of it as a few minutes with
me by the "virtual water cooler." Each month
I'll share photo and printing tips,
suggestions for interesting galleries,
museums or other places to visit, or
highlights of interesting things I've found
in the world of photography and imaging.
To kick
things off, I'd like
to recommend a
place that recently left me speechless. If
you love photography, it's a location that
can easily occupy your undivided attention
for hours. It's the powerHouse
Arena, a huge 10,000+ square foot
space in Brooklyn, New York, filled with
hundreds of photo books-most of them
published by powerHouse Books, a company who
specializes in fine art, documentary, pop
culture, fashion, and celebrity books.
Browsing the
books, arranged
neatly on tables
that dot the Arena's landscape, is like
taking a trip around the world. The range of
paper stocks, book sizes, and subject matter
is absolutely mind blowing, and the print
quality of virtually all of the 100+ books I
viewed was superb. At the Arena, you'll also
find an area with some limited edition
prints, and a table filled with Holgas and
other plastic film-based cameras.
The
powerHouse Arena is
located at 37 Main
Street in the DUMBO section of Brooklyn. If
you visit Brooklyn before October 13, you can
also catch a glimpse of Olafur Eliasson's New
York City waterfalls. For more on that, visit
this
site.
And it's
never too early to
start planning
for the 2nd annual New York Photo Festival
(May 14th - 24th 2009). For info about the
first Festival, which took place from May
14-18, 2008 at the powerHouse arena and in
nearby exhibition spaces, visit the main show
site at www.nyphotofestival.com.
I'd like to
thank Tim
Anderson for the
opportunity to contribute to Red Dog News,
and I welcome your comments and suggestions.
You can reach me at
my site.

Dear Tim,
For those of you who are students, you are
either preparing to back to school, or you
have had a REALLY short summer and have
already returned to the halls of higher
knowledge and social consciousness. Good luck
to you! As we all know (don't we?), knowledge
is not the key; rather, it is what we do with
that knowledge that makes the difference in
our life, as well as the lives of those
around us.
By the time the next Red Dog News is
published Tom and I hope to have its sister
site, Red Dog Journal, up and running. On
this site you will be able to read articles
by a few people who know a lot more about
photography than I. Leading that group is
Andrew Darlow (see sidebar), with "The Darlow
Report," a
regular feature that will enable Andrew to
espouse on a variety of topics. If you are an
educator in our wonderful and glorious field
of pursuit, and you would like to write for
us, drop a line
to Tim, and we'll discuss the
possibilities.
The response to Red Dog News has
continued to be tremendous! Tom and I
appreciate both your readership and your
continuing donations. Red Dog's tail
continues to wag in appreciation! Just
looking at our statistics for the first two
issues indicates that you like to read about
photographers, as well as go to their
individual websites and take a look at their
portfolios. Of the six individual
photographers I mentioned in Red Dog News
#2, they garnered almost 40% of the
clicks. We have been able to maintain open
and click-through rates that are much higher
than industry standards, so we must be
providing you with the material to want to
read. If we're not, we are counting on you to
tell us. So, let's get on with it: grab that
cup of coffee, the ice cold beer from the
fridge, or the red wine that has been
breathing the appropriate amount of time, and
settle down into another relaxing read.
As always, keep the shutter open!
Thanks!

First Look

In the last issue of Red Dog News, I
mentioned several photographers whose work I
had reviewed at the recent Photo
Lucida. As I mentioned above the
response to their links was tremendous! So,
carrying on in that soon-to-be tradition, in
this issue I would like to highlight the work
of a photographer whose work has
recently caught my eye in a very positive
manner, Mitch
Dobrowner. I have been aware of Mitch
for a little more than a year, and can tell
you that his work is some of the best
black-and-white landscape work I have seen in
quite a while: call it Ansel Adams on
steroids. His ability to locate first the
scenery and then to be able to print the work
in such a manner that it compels you to look
closer, and closer, and closer yet at the
print, speaks volumes about the integrity of
his photographs.

Alan Jaras and the Art of the Photogram

British photographic artist Alan Jaras
doesn't need a camera to create stunning
works of art. These works, called photograms
(photographs require the use of a camera, of
course), come from exposing small amounts of
light directly to film in a darkroom
environment, turning the room into a giant
camera obscura. Jaras uses textured glass
instead of a lens, and captures the beautiful
effects of light refraction, which are
familiar to anyone owning a copy of Pink
Floyd's classic Dark Side of the Moon. Click
below to access Jaras' flickr page.

August events at the Center for Creative Photography

The Center for Creative Photography at the
University of Arizona has announced the
lineup of events for August 2008. Exhibitions
include the ongoing "Edward Weston: Mexico,"
running through November 15, 2008 at Phoenix
Art Museum, http://www.phxart.org/. The
Center's exhibition "Accommodating Nature:
The Photographs of Frank Gohlke," opening
August 16 (reception on September 5) and
running through November 2, 2008, examines
the ever-changing relationship between man
and nature, evidenced in the immense grain
elevators of the Midwestern breadbasket, the
devastation wrought by Mt. St. Helens in
Washington State, and more. The Center has
also assembled a new selection available in
the Print Study Room: "Ansel Adams in
Arizona: 1950-1968."

PHOTO BLOG: Courthouse Confessions: In Their Own Words

In an ongoing photo blog series,
photojournalist Steven Hirsch waits outside
of the Manhattan Criminal Court in New York
to hear the "Courthouse Confessions" of
released defendants. The photographs are
informed by Hirsch's extensive freelance
experience shooting for the New York Times,
the New York Post, and many others. The
stories of the defendants are presented
verbatim in long, winding sentences. Despite
having been released (or perhaps because of
it), the crime alone is communicated with
startling honesty within these sometimes
rambling, sometimes dubious personal stories.

Edward Burtynsky proposes a 10,000 year stone ink gallery at Nevada mountaintop

The Long Now Foundation has announced plans
for a 10,000 Year Clock monument, to be
installed on a mountaintop property in
Nevada. Built to last and run for ten
millennia, the clock may have competition in
the form of a proposed permanent art gallery
with works made with durable materials.
Photographer Edward Burtynsky made the formal
proposal, suggesting a "carbon transfer
print"-a process using ground stone in
magenta, cyan, and yellow instead of ink.
Kept in archival condition, such prints could
last through the clock's running time. Read

Wall Arch collapses, leaves legacy of landscape photography

Stone arches are majestic natural phenomena,
and have long been a beloved subject for
adventurous nature photographers like John
Annerino, who has had to rappel and climb to
capture such amazing rock formations in
America's National Parks. Wall Arch has
always been one of the easiest to access for
photographers and sightseers, on the other
hand. Sadly, it is no more. A neighbor to the
Landscape Arch (fortunately still standing),
the rock formation collapsed the night of
August 4, 2008. It was discovered and named
by Lewis T. McKinney in 1948, and was 71 feet
wide and 33 1/2 feet high. It ranked 12th in
size among the more than 2,000 known arches
in the park.
