The Darlow Report

It's great to be back. The summer is in full force here in the
northeast, and with July 4 almost upon us, there are many great
fireworks photo opportunities for those who live or are traveling in
the USA. On that note, I wrote an article with some tips for
photographing fireworks about two years ago, which you can find here: http://www.tamron.com/enews/archives/may07_learn_seasonal2.asp

For this edition, I share a few great websites to help you sell and
market your work, and I also mention some upcoming black and white
fine-art printing workshops.

Quick Website Suggestion #1:

AD17-Watson

Fine Art Views Blog by Clint Watson - http://clintwatson.net

This is an outstanding blog geared toward helping artists achieve
marketing and personal success with straightforward and often very
humorous articles and observations by Clint Watson and others. A
related free daily e-newsletter called FineArtViews is also available,
and I highly recommend it. You can browse the newsletter's archives
here: http://www.fineartviews.com/archives/

Clint Watson is the former owner of a national art gallery and current
provider of artist websites and marketing help through
FineArtStudioOnline (http://fineartstudioonline.com). Though clearly
aimed at painters, the advice is just as valuable in my opinion for
photographers, mixed media artists, or any other artist for that matter.

For example, here is how one of his posts begins: "Of every $100 in
sales the average artist has, he only gets to keep $30"
Read it here: http://clintwatson.net/blog/3085/Another-Reason-to-Raise-Your-Prices

Quick Website Suggestion #2: http://www.artprintissues.com

Artprintissues.com, is similar to Clint Watson's blog mentioned above.
It's a blog run by Barney Davey, another individual who has a lot of
experience in the area of art marketing. Barney Davey is an author and
consultant, and for more than 15 years he worked as a sales, art
marketing and publishing executive for Decor magazine and its sister,
Decor Expo tradeshows. If you haven't been to an ArtExpo in New York
(I've exhibited once and attended about 4 times), it is an amazing
show, with a dizzying array of art for sale, from sculpture to
photography.

I recently finished reading Davey's book, How to Profit from the Art
Print Market. It is a fantastic resource for anyone who would like to
sell art. Just the links section in the back of the book is well worth
the cost. You can find a link to it as well as a free Chapter download
on the Artprintissues.com blog (top right-hand corner).

On both of the blogs listed above run by Clint Watson and Barney
Davey, the list of suggested links related to art and marketing are
extensive and well worth a look. Enjoy!
