The Darlow Report

Hi folks! The hazy, hot and humid weather in my neck of the woods (northeast USA) reminds me of the summer I spent in Nara, Japan in 1988. It also brings back memories because of an upcoming show that I'm having in New Brunswick, NJ, entitled East + West: Photographs of New York and Japan. The opening is Friday 8/28 and more info can be found below. For this edition, I share a great website (and some related sites), and I also mention some upcoming fine-art printing workshops. Quick Website Suggestion: The Portland Metro Photographic News: http://www.pmpnonline.com/
This fantastic site was founded by Thomas Hubbard, who is a friend and someone who is very passionate about photography. Though focused on the Portland Metro area, much of the information on the site covers general photo information. The website has a Portland, Oregon area photo events calendar, plus many great news stories about photo shows, camera club news, and much more. One standout page on the site is a photo essay from Photolucida (a biannual photo event held in Portland) by Tom Hubbard, founder and publisher of PMPN. You can find it here: http://www.pmpnonline.com/photolucida.htm Just one example of a well-thought out and well-written article is by Charles Cramer, whose work and prints are truly magnificent. The article is entitled: "Guest Commentary, In Search of Your Best Images," and can be found here: http://www.pmpnonline.com/apps/blog/show/ 1581460-in-search-of-your-best-images-by-charles-cramer Like all art, photography is subjective, and different people are drawn to different work. This article covers that topic. The whole process of editing is so important. Think about shows like American Idol and The Amazing Race. It is great editing that contributes a lot to the success of those shows, as well as many magazines, books and websites. Thomas Hubbard has other sites as well that are definitely worth a look. Some, like Hubbard's Camera, have a lot of solid, basic info about photography. An overview of them can be found here: http://www.blogger.com/profile/00286182348158010983 Here is just one example: How to convert a DSLR for Infrared Photography: http://hubsphotographytips.blogspot.com/2009/06/converting-dslr-for-infrared.html ______________________________ Upcoming Exhibition in New Brunswick, NJ I'm happy to announce an upcoming show of my prints in New Brunswick, NJ. New York City and Japan are places that have had a profound effect on me. In this show, I include about 25 images from both places, from 20x24 framed prints to 40x70 inch prints on canvas.
