PDN PhotoPlus Expo and Free inkAID Tutorial
Last week was the PDN PhotoPlus Expo in New York City, and as usual,
it was a great show, filled with new cameras, lenses, photo bags,
gadgets, tripods, and my personal favorites–inkjet printers and
papers. The photokina show held in Germany that preceded it in
September brought with it many announcements of products that were
shown at PhotoPlus Expo in New York.
I enjoyed having the opportunity to speak about inkjet printers and
papers at the show, and it was great to meet with many of the people
who I see there almost every year, as well as many new people. I
spent some time in the inkAID booth (http://www.inkaid1.com) during
the show. They produce a number of topcoats for papers and other
materials that allow you achieve pretty incredible results using
inkjet printers. The samples in the inkAID booth were amazing.
If you are interested in the process, a free four page PDF by Artist,
educator and author Karin Schminke entitled: “Printing on Uncoated
Papers Using inkAID Coatings” is available here for download:

Tips and Techniques: An Essential Printing Resource for Photographers
(Course Technology PTR).
I always enjoy reading first-person accounts from the show floor.
Here are a few that I found particularly interesting:

Ryan Brenizer's Amazon Blog, with some good coverage from the show,
and some great photos from the 63rd annual Alfred E. Smith dinner
(some of the best political humor this year was featured there-search
YouTube.com for the clips).

Douglas Kirkland's Freeze Frame Exhibition at Calumet Photo in New
York City through 11/7/2008

Also at PhotoPlus Expo, HP and Calumet Photographic hosted an opening
reception with acclaimed Hollywood photographer Douglas Kirkland of
his "Freeze Frame" exhibit. Printed on the new HP Designjet Z3200,
"Freeze Frame" contains more than 400 photographs taken by Kirkland
from the 1960s to 2000s.
The images truly offer a glimpse into American movie history, and the
show is on display until November 7, 2008. I own the Freeze Frame
book, and I highly recommend it. The imagery and print quality are
both fantastic. For more info, the show overview can be found here as
a PDF.
