The Darlow Report
by Andrew Darlow

Hi folks! For this installment, I share a printing tip, recommend a blog and magazine, and include news
about a few upcoming events and workshops. Printing Tip: Take into account your time. Are you able to invest the time and care it takes to prepare files for printing, hand feed
individual sheets of paper when necessary, load rolls of canvas or paper (if you choose to use
rolls), wait for prints to finish printing, and then trim them properly when necessary? In many
cases, you can actually save time by printing yourself, but it’s a good idea to think about this
important detail before making a purchase. I prefer to do my own printing, but there are many
reasons to consider having someone else do your printing for you. Also consider the investment necessary to keep inks and paper on-hand. Or, as I mention in
another section of the book, you can purchase a smaller size printer and just have larger prints
made when you need them. Another related item to consider is that you should not have inks
sitting for months unused in a printer. It is a good idea to make at least one print every week
(even a small reference print like the one I have available at
http://www.andrewdarlow.com/calib.html, is good to print, both to keep the inks moving through your printer and to see whether you are getting any ink shifts. I recommend keeping a reference print of an image like the one I linked to above that you are
happy with, labeled with important info, such as printer, paper, profile, rendering intent, profile,
media type setting and quality setting. Then just compare any new print with that one to see if
your printer is in good shape. Sometimes a cleaning is necessary, but I would not rely solely
on a nozzle check. This tip was partially excerpted from "301 Inkjet Tips and Techniques: An Essential Printing
Resource for Photographers," by Andrew Darlow, http://www.inkjettips.com -------------------- Blog Pick: pdnedu.blogs.com I mentioned this on ImagingBuffet.com and thought I'd share this with the Red Dog family: There is an excellent blog written by the editors at PDN. Some of the highlighted stories include
a link to a podcast on how to succeed in a down economy, as well as information about a lecture
at the School of Visual Arts Amphitheater by photographer Larry Fink on November 20, 2008. I also learned about some upcoming photo contests, like the PDNedu Student Photo Contest. The site's address is http://pdnedu.blogs.com . ------------------- Review: Website Magazine
Sometimes I read a magazine and I'm just amazed at the quality and depth of the content.
This is one of those magazines: Website Magazine. I recommend this magazine to anyone
who has or wants to build a website that is more effective overall and that attracts more visitors. I could go into the nitty gritty, but since it is a free subscription, you can check it
out here: http://www.websitemagazine.com/content/ I think you can choose from print or digital versions but that may depend on your location
(the links are embedded in the digital version which is very nice, but I prefer the print
version for reading a lot of text). --------------------- Upcoming Color Management and Fine-Art Inkjet Printing Workshops I have a few upcoming full-day inkjet printing workshops in Berkley Heights, New Jersey,
